president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president joe biden apparently dropped by the white house today. do you know if he and the president have spoken? >> reporter: well, he is here at the whi

the simple reason, tom, obama will not agree to any significant spending cut. so why give him any kind of a grand bargain that the press will give him credit for and he can end the year as some kind of victorious guy? if you look at the u.s. deficit is about $4 trillion a year. these tax increases cover about 400 billion. that's 9 or 10%. that's. it the rest of this battle is over entitlements. i mean the democrats could solve this whole thing simply by agreeing to a minor increase, just a two year increase. >> the president did put that on the table and the republicans reject that. the real issue here is there going to be a self-inflicted wound to the economy? the uncertainty here. either way taxes on the wealthy are going up. they'll go up under a deal approved in the last hours which may or may not happen or if it doesn't, there's no deal, then we go over the so-called cliff and the tax goes up there. so either way taxes are going up. >> if the president wanted a deal on entitlements, all he has to do is raise the age from social security to 65 to 67, maybe

set to address the press and the nation hopefully to give us a little bit of a better sense of how that meeting wrapped up. >> kristin, how do we square the sense of optimism and everyone saying that the talks were constructive when they're still stuck on the same points? if this hasn't moved on from $250,000 a year? >> reporter: correct. it's a very good point, and so the question is what can leader reid do, mitch mcconnell do within the next 24 hours to basically put together a compromise package? i think what they are going to put forth is going to be a smaller package. it's not going to deal with the debt ceiling, for example. it might deal with some of those spending cuts, but it's not going to be that broad, sweeping plan that president obama and house speaker boehner had been initially working on. this is going to be a much more scaled back version of a bill. just to sort of get over this hump. so i think that right now all parties believe that is really the main hope for getting something done, but you're absolutely right. the same sticking points remain, and that is going to be
